This website is dedicated to the simple yogis. The ones who recognise the completeness of existence. Who know that there is nothing to be added, nothing to be built or gained. That the mastery of life is nothing but living itself.

Matthew Yap is a yoga teacher at the Home of Yoga in Mosman Park (Perth), Western Australia.

Matt has been practising yoga since he discovered the world of gurus, prayer, and meditation. In his early years of university, the inspiring, mysterious, and colourful world of yoga opened up so many possibilities of life at a time when he was questioning the limited options that society offered him. While studying to become a doctor, he learnt about the ills of society, and of the limited ways in which the medical profession could hope to address these. He saw that illness is largely due to social, historical, environmental, and spiritual imbalances, and that medical illness was largely just a downstream effect of these. For him, yoga was a clear way in which the effects of such external pressures could be relieved. He stopped studying medicine and his since started practising yoga with a greater understanding.

Matt refers to himself as a scientifically-literate yogi, with training from both worlds. He has recently completed his PhD in epidemiology at the University of Western Australia (this is his thesis) and is currently studying a Masters of Teaching at Notre Dame University in Fremantle with a view to teach maths and science for high school students. He has studied yoga since 2009, and in the past few years, he has trained with Perth's Sam Weinstein before his passing and completed 500 hours of training with Yoga Gita, Mysore, India.

In his classes at the Home of Yoga in Mosman Park or the South Perth foreshore, the philosophy of Yoga is explored through asana, pranayama, and meditation. Matt is deeply interested in the concept of freedom and living from the heart, while his educational background keeps him grounded in the realities of life and is rational in his approach towards boundless bliss. If you attend one of his classes, you can expect to inhabit the whole body with a sense of expansion and freedom. The idea that yoga can bring everyone towards an understanding and blossoming of life is a continuous source of energy and joy, and he would love to cross paths with you!

Many of these articles have been inspired by the teachings of Sri Vijay Gopala. The directness and depth of his teachings on yoga can be found in his youtube channel.
